How To Stay Cool When It's So Hot, You Just Can't Even

Summer is here and like always, we are all surprised that’s it’s hot here in New Orleans. I am absolutely guilty of whining, “But it’s sooo hot outside...,” more than I should admit. I'm still not part of the, “Is It Hot Enough Out There For Ya?” club though. I’m very proud of that.

All kidding aside, here are a few things I do to stay cool in the hot days of a New Orleans Summer:

Rosewater & Peppermint Face and Body Spray

Amongst the many benefits of rosewater – maintaining the skin’s PH level, hydrating, revitalizing, and moisturizing skin, powerful mood enhancer – the addition of peppermint oil adds a cooling sensation. The aroma is very calming to the senses as well.

Whether I am working or running errands, I have a small bottle on me at all times. I always purchase my rosewater locally from CoCoNola Skincare.

EXTRA COOL TIP  Keep your Rosewater & Peppermint Spray in the refrigerator when you are home for an extra refreshing splash of cool.

Throw On An Ice Bandana or Neck Scarf

In the words of Birdman, “Tell me why, why, is it soo, That I’m soo-oh, ice cold.”

Easy Ice Bandana. It is exactly as it sounds.

  • Step 1 - Start with a regular square bandana or neck scarf (preferably cotton) of your choice and lay flat in a diamond orientation.
  • Step 2 - Pack a small zip lock baggie with some ice cubes (now you can go as large as you really want to here, but keep in mind the end result will be much more voluminous on your neck).
  • Step 3 - Place your ice pack in the center of the scarf/diamond and fold over the top to meet the bottom.
  • Step 4 - Tightly roll the fabric into itself until you have one long roll to fix around your neck.
  • Step 5 - Tie the bandana or scarf around your neck with the ice packet in the back. Knot as desired and enjoy the coolness!

EXTRA COOL TIP – You can swap out the ziplock for a chamois lining and let the ice melt and evaporate instead of keeping it contained. This would be very useful to those of you who spend a lot of time outdoors for work or play.

Stay Under Your Umbrella-ella-ella… or Parasol

No really, getting a sunburn or skin cancer is really uncool. You can avoid damaging your lovely skin and also easily feel 10-15 degrees cooler just by providing your own shade. Some of us vampires don’t mind the classic black even in the Summer months, but if you're looking for something with a bit more pop, we recommend checking out this adorable hand painted parasol from Luna Bazaar.

Drink Up, Buttercup!

I know staying hydrated seems totally obvious, but we've all seen the wasted summer tourists equipped with their fish bowl of sugar infused alcohol stylishly yoked around their neck. Would they be that drunk if they had maybe hydrated a little better? We may never know. But, we do know one thing, we do not want to be in their shoes. So drink water and stay hydrated!

Current Obsession: Caffeine Free Iced Tea blended with Sparkling Water!

  • Try This: If you're in New Orleans, stop into Church Alley and ask for an Iced Madagascar Almond Spice Tea with a Topochico Mineral water and let me know what you think!
  • Try This: Again, if you're in New Orleans (sorry out-of-towners), hit up French Truck Coffee and get an Iced Hibiscus Tea with sparkling water half sweet.

Infuse Yoself

Here are a few easy to make water infusions that all use approximately 18 ounces of water:

  • Peach + Ginger – 5 peach slices, 1 inch of fresh ginger (peeled & sliced)
  • Watermelon + Mint – five mint leaves, 7-8 small watermelon cubes
  • Strawberry + Basil – 4 medium strawberries, 5 leaves of basil
  • Cucumber + Mint – 5-6 slices of cucumber, 5 mint leaves

INFUSION TIPS – Let your water infuse 3-4 hours for the best results. Be sure to wash all fruits, herbs, and veggies before infusing. Citrus rings will cause bitterness if you let them infuse too long, so remove them after 4 hours. Refrigerate to prolong infusion and remove all fruits, herbs, and veggies after 12 hours (you can keep the water).

Infused Water Drinks

And for those of you who just cannot

Listen, if you are adding six ounces of Lacroix to your rosé you are still *technically* hydrating. Add a little ice and a dash of mint or berry and you got yourself a spritzer!

Cool is a State of Mind

Summer is a great time to take it easy and take in the beauty that is all around us. I feel like I should insert a quote about how summertime is slower in the South, but the truth is, it’s always a good idea to slow down and enjoy what we have.

Here are a few things I really like to do during the warmer weather:

  • Eat snoballs
  • Wear short shorts & cute lightweight dresses
  • Pool hop
  • Cocktails outside
  • Visit one of the many nighttime art markets here in NOLA - Speaking of which, we're a vendor at Frenchmen Art Market, so stop in and say, "hi!"

Pool hopping to stay cool

Feeling Active?

  • Go to the park with a book and blanket and sit under a tree.
  • Take a long walk around the neighborhood and notice all the flowers in bloom.
  • Get on a bike to meet friends instead of driving.

Outside activities not your thing?

  • Check out a museum or the Audubon Aquarium & Insectarium (located close to one another)
  • Have a Spa Day at a local spa. Many of them run summer specials and have locals discounts.

Well, that about does it. It's not easy to stay cool during the summer months, but with a little creativity, you can stay cool (relatively) and still have fun!

If you're looking for something lightweight to go with your summer styles, try pairing one of our lovely Chevron Chokers with a slinky top or even your bikini!
