Summer is here and like always, we are all surprised that’s it’s hot here in New Orleans. I am absolutely guilty of whining, “But it’s sooo hot outside...,” more than I should admit. I'm still not part of the, “Is It Hot Enough Out There For Ya?” club though. I’m very proud of that.
All kidding aside, here are a few things I do to stay cool in the hot days of a New Orleans Summer:
Amongst the many benefits of rosewater – maintaining the skin’s PH level, hydrating, revitalizing, and moisturizing skin, powerful mood enhancer – the addition of peppermint oil adds a cooling sensation. The aroma is very calming to the senses as well.
Whether I am working or running errands, I have a small bottle on me at all times. I always purchase my rosewater locally from CoCoNola Skincare.
EXTRA COOL TIP – Keep your Rosewater & Peppermint Spray in the refrigerator when you are home for an extra refreshing splash of cool.
In the words of Birdman, “Tell me why, why, is it soo, That I’m soo-oh, ice cold.”
EXTRA COOL TIP – You can swap out the ziplock for a chamois lining and let the ice melt and evaporate instead of keeping it contained. This would be very useful to those of you who spend a lot of time outdoors for work or play.
No really, getting a sunburn or skin cancer is really uncool. You can avoid damaging your lovely skin and also easily feel 10-15 degrees cooler just by providing your own shade. Some of us vampires don’t mind the classic black even in the Summer months, but if you're looking for something with a bit more pop, we recommend checking out this adorable hand painted parasol from Luna Bazaar.
I know staying hydrated seems totally obvious, but we've all seen the wasted summer tourists equipped with their fish bowl of sugar infused alcohol stylishly yoked around their neck. Would they be that drunk if they had maybe hydrated a little better? We may never know. But, we do know one thing, we do not want to be in their shoes. So drink water and stay hydrated!
Here are a few easy to make water infusions that all use approximately 18 ounces of water:
INFUSION TIPS – Let your water infuse 3-4 hours for the best results. Be sure to wash all fruits, herbs, and veggies before infusing. Citrus rings will cause bitterness if you let them infuse too long, so remove them after 4 hours. Refrigerate to prolong infusion and remove all fruits, herbs, and veggies after 12 hours (you can keep the water).
Listen, if you are adding six ounces of Lacroix to your rosé you are still *technically* hydrating. Add a little ice and a dash of mint or berry and you got yourself a spritzer!
Summer is a great time to take it easy and take in the beauty that is all around us. I feel like I should insert a quote about how summertime is slower in the South, but the truth is, it’s always a good idea to slow down and enjoy what we have.
Well, that about does it. It's not easy to stay cool during the summer months, but with a little creativity, you can stay cool (relatively) and still have fun!
